Ecosystem Values

The study area is Grand County, Colorado. On the left side of the screen are markers that study participants were asked to use to identify the location of different values found in nature. Values in nature are also called ecosystem services because they provide services that make quality of life possible for humans. Some ecosystem services, like providing food and water, or opportunities for recreation and social interaction, are easy to see and understand. Other ecosystem services are more abstract and involve processes, such as regulating the climate and controlling disease, or supplying soil nutrients and pollinating crops. Click on Layers button (right side of screen) to display the location of ecosystem services identified by residents. The point locations provided by study participants were combined into "hotspots" (clusters of points) and appear on the map as polygons.
